The CountSilva Linings Playbook
John Silva enjoys a moment free of HITS' pestering to share a smile with longtime client Kim Gordon.
An enthusiastic record collector and passionate musicologist, manager John Silva is what in the sports world is called a “player’s coach.”
His artists swear to his love of music and his integrity, and adamantly call him the best rock manager in the business. With those pillars firmly in place, he’s built Silva Artist Management into an enduring powerhouse.
Based off Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles, SAM—with a relatively small staff of about a dozen veteran managers—oversees the careers of such artists as Foo Fighters (WME), Beck (CAA), The Chicks (CAA), Queens of the Stone Age (WME), St. Vincent (UTA), Jenny Lewis (WME), Jimmy Eat World (UTA), Spoon (UTA), Norah Jones (AIG and CAA), The War on Drugs (WME), Jehnny Beth (WME) and Violet Grohl.
Dave Grohl and Beck
Silva managed Nirvana during its meteoric rise to global fame through Kurt Cobain’s suicide in 1994 and has repped Dave Grohl and the stadium-filling Foos ever since. His relationship with Beck likewise spans three decades. Silva's company also manages the estates of Nirvana and the Beastie Boys, as well as Sonic Youth and its members.
Indeed, there's never a quiet moment at SAM, which this summer had Lewis on the road with her bandmates in the reunited Rilo Kiley and Beck performing with local symphony orchestras.
Meanwhile, Foo Fighters are about to wrap a short run of secret U.S. club shows before their first proper tour with new drummer Ilan Rubin begins Oct. 2 in Jakarta, and will be very active on the road next year. In addition, Queens of the Stone Age have already been tapped to support System of a Down's massive European stadium tour in summer 2026.
A testament to his acumen, Silva is one of only a handful of managers with four artists in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—Nirvana, Foo Fighters, the Beastie Boys and Nine Inch Nails.
