Kacey's Got Another New Album Due in January
Kacey Musgraves is taking Middle of Nowhere even farther south of the border.
The genre-defying artist has announced Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes, a 16-track collection arriving Jan. 15 on Lost Highway. It expands on its predecessor’s eclectic exploration of solitude and contentment through the musical and cultural connections between Texas and Mexico.
Two tracks, “Weekend in Texas” and Musgraves’ rendition of Norteño classic “Mi Tesoro,” arrive Thursday at midnight ET.
The new set comprises 11 original songs like “Denim on Denim” and “Pretty Horses,” plus five covers. Four tracks are sung entirely in Spanish, including a newly recorded version of Middle of Nowhere’s “Uncertain, TX” featuring Mexican Norteño group Intocable (the original featured Willie Nelson).
The album also presents George Strait’s “All My Exes (Kacey’s Version),” Freddy Fender’s “Before the Next Teardrop Falls” and “(Hey Baby) Qué Pasó?”—we particularly enjoy hearing Kacey sing the line “Thought I was your only vato”—and “Tú Solo Tú,” recorded live in Mexico City with Mariachi Oro de América (and famously covered by Selena for her 1995 album Dreaming of You).
Musgraves’ AEG Presents-promoted Middle of Nowhere tour visits Oakland Thursday and wraps with shows Oct. 26-27 at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena.
The Sandbox-managed artist heads into the 60th CMA Awards on Nov. 18 with five nominations, including Album of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year, plus Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year for “Dry Spell” and Musical Event of the Year for “Horses and Divorces,” her collaboration with Miranda Lambert.
