Monotone's Matt Pollack

What was the first concert you ever attended?

The New York Dolls. I couldn’t have been more than seven years old. My uncle, who also happened to manage those fine lads (R.I.P. Marty Thau), was caring for me that particular weekend. I assume social services didn’t exist back then in NYC. It was terrifying, yet made me who I am today.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

It was from a college professor. I don’t remember the exact wording, but the message was along the lines of: Always be surrounded professionally with the things and people that you have the greatest interest in. This way job and life will never be grueling opposites.

Name a mistake you’ve made in the biz, and what you learned from it.

Deliver bad news as quickly as it meets you. Work honestly to resolve even when you don’t have the answers. And never skirt, avoid or hide. I think we have all learned the ramifications of doing the opposite.
