Grammy Contenders: Jai'Len Josey, Rostam, FLO, Aitana
Music's Biggest Night meets Music's Lamest Trade Magazine, but don't hold that against these top Grammy contenders.
Jai’Len Josey
What inspired you while you were recording Serial Romantic?
The situations, emotions and issues I experienced with the lovers I was singing about. Musically, I was listening to a lot of Donny Hathaway when it came to the ballads, and ghettotech was a big inspiration for the more upbeat songs. Those two different worlds shaped the sound and emotion of the album.
Rostam
What inspired you while you were recording American Stories?
I was definitely inspired by taking road trips in America. Driving for me is a chance to listen to music that’s a work in progress. It’s a chance to enjoy something before it’s done, and sometimes a chance to make it better.

FLO
What’s your favorite moment on “Leak It?”
The middle eight. The song originally had a much simpler bridge. We knew it needed to be a vocal-girl-group moment. We went in with [songwriter-producer] Oak Felder, and he made it what it is today. We lost our minds when we heard it back!
Aitana
What inspired you while you were making “SUPERESTRELLA?”
I was listening to a lot of different music, but I remember being very inspired by ABBA and also by artists like Chappell Roan. I really wanted a lot of synths and for that part of the album to feel brighter and more fun.
It was actually important for me because I had written so many sad songs at that point. I was going through a difficult time personally and everything I was writing was coming from that place. At some point I was like, okay, I also need to make songs that make me feel good. “SUPERESTRELLA” came from wanting to find that light again.
