AI and the Charts: Stop the Slop

Just weeks after the industry aligned around voluntary AI labeling, a broad coalition of music companies has proposed global principles for AI chart eligibility.

The goal is to protect and promote artists and songwriters, embrace responsible AI, and prevent AI slop and fraud from being rewarded by the charts.

If companies that compete every day for artists and market share can find common ground on this, what’s Billboard waiting for? The industry is regulating itself before some entity outside the biz decides to do it. And given the present landscape, the fine folks at the Industry Bible should consider what that entity might be.

Despite having created our own slop for 40 years, we strongly support this move. Billboard should, too—and should integrate these sensible guardrails into its chart methodology.

Did we use AI to generate this piece, because we were very sleepy? Not as far as you know.
