Start Your Sobbing: John Mayer, Mercury Team for New JV, Single
John Mayer is getting into the label business, launching Sob Rock Records through a partnership with Mercury Records—and releasing his first solo single in five years in the process.
“Tom and Jerry,” out on Friday, is Mayer’s first new song since 2021’s gold-certified Sob Rock. Produced and written by the singer-songwriter-guitarist and Blake Slatkin, the track premiered Thursday on Mayer’s SiriusXM channel, LIFE With John Mayer.
“I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating every time—I get to work with a group of incredibly talented and deeply dedicated artists who will stop at nothing until the sound comes into focus and becomes a picture,” said Mayer, who’s managed by Full Stop and Moir Entertainment.
“Working with Tyler Arnold and the talented team at Mercury Records has already proven to be a great partnership,” he added. “The path from creative vision to execution has never been easier or more rewarding. I feel very inspired, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
Mercury Chairman and CEO Arnold welcomed the seven-time Grammy winner to the label, calling Mayer “one of the greatest artists of all time.”
The deal adds another high-profile artist-led venture to Mercury’s operation, which was relaunched in 2022 and has built a roster spanning Post Malone, Noah Kahan, Bo Burnham, Zayn, Marshmello and Lord Huron, among others. The label also maintains strategic alliances involving Morgan Wallen, Tucker Wetmore and Metro Boomin.
Mayer spent the past decade performing with Dead & Company, whose Sphere residency drew nearly half a million attendees to Sin City. He’ll be back in April, May and June for 21 shows featuring three separate configurations: solo, full band and the John Mayer Trio.
For its part, HITS sobs a little every day.
