Add Web is Dead

BACK TO THE FUTURE: Alongside Anderson’s piece is a complimentary article by Michael Wolff that “explains why the new breed of media titan is forsaking the Web for more promising (and profitable) pastures.” Wolff writes that “The Web of countless entrepreneurs [is] being overshadowed by the single entrepreneur-mogul-visionary model, a ruthless paragon of everything the Web was not: rigid standards, high design, centralized control. We are returning to a world that already exists—one in which we chase the transformative effects of music and film instead of our brief (relatively speaking) flirtation with the transformative effects of the Web.” Hmm…, this could actually be good for the music biz—though not necessarily as we know it. The piece comes with this handy-dandy “Then and Now” graphic. (8/18a)
