Early adopters in the independent-artist community are using artificial intelligence to aid their creative process and marketing efforts, according to a study, the AI in Music Report, from Believe and TuneCore.
In the analysis of nearly 1.6k artists from more than 10 countries, 50% are engaged in AI and have a positive perception of its benefits and opportunities. Conversely, 39% are either unaware of or apathetic about the technology.
More than a quarter of the artists surveyed have used AI music tools to create artwork (57%), develop promotional assets (37%) and engage fans (20%).
The artists are most interested in using AI in their creative processes (35%), to help with marketing and promotion for release planning (31%), to create promo content (18%) and to engage and grow their fan bases (16%).
Half show a willingness to offer their music for machine learning, while one-third would grant consent for their music, voice or artwork to be used in generative AI. Of the artists willing to consent, the vast majority would do so only under specific conditions of control, compensation and transparency.
The artists' primary concerns about the technology are seeing their work replaced by music made by AI (77%), plagiarism (61%), incorrect attribution of creative input (58%) and unfair distribution of revenue (46%).
