SPOTIFY DIVES INTO AFROBEATS

Spotify has officially launched Afrobeats: Journey of a Billion Streams, a microsite showcasing the global impact and growth of the genre.

"There is no doubt that Afrobeats as a genre is here to stay and will only continue to shatter more ceilings," said Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, MD for Spotify in Sub-Saharan Africa. "This year alone, the genre has been played for more than 223 million hours, with streams exceeding 7.1 billion on Spotify. We created this site for both old and new fans of the genre who'd like a better understanding of how and where this explosive sound came to be.”

In 2022, Afrobeats generated over 13b streams on Spotify, with the U.S. seeing 311% growth since 2017.

In addition to the latest Spotify data and trends related to Afrobeats listening, the site will present Afrobeats timelines over the years and other information about its evolution, how it emerged through melding with other genres and profiles of women who've helped propel the genre.

Afrobeats.By.Spotify.com will also feature regular interviews with experts, videos, quizzes and more. Over the next eight weeks, it will be updated biweekly. The destination will remain active thereafter as an always-on, regularly revised resource.
