In the wake of Afghanistan’s fall to the Taliban, The Shalizi Group’s Moe Shalizi has launched a GoFundMe campaign to aid the country’s refugees and help mitigate the humanitarian crisis unfolding there.
A first-generation Afghan American, Shalizi—whose parents came to the U.S. as refugees—began his effort five days ago with his own, $100,000 donation and has since surpassed his initial goal of $250,000, raising more than $508,000 toward his new, $600,000 goal.
“Since the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and subsequent Taliban takeover, there has been an escalation of violence throughout the country, causing civilian casualties and destruction of infrastructure, including homes, health facilities, public services and schools,” said Shalizi. "The world is watching Afghanistan and looking for ways to support innocent Afghans. I’ve had so many people reach out to me about helping my home country, and this is why I decided to start this GoFundMe. A full-scale humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Afghanistan and we must do something to help those impacted.”
