THE WAITING IS THE HARDEST PART

After waking up today as unsettled as it was when it went to bed Tuesday, America started to see a clearer picture on who the next president will be by late afternoon on the East Coast. And in encouraging good news, four states legalized pot.

There’s still no clear winner in the presidential election, despite the unhinged incumbent's attempt to suppress the vote count—yet another assault on democracy—but two battleground states, Michigan and Wisconsin, have been declared Joe Biden wins.

The day has been spent watching seven states as vote tallies come in. Here's where we are at 5pm ET.

Biden is leading Donald Trump, 253 electoral votes to 214 per The New York Times and MSNBC or 248-214 according to The Wall Street Journal.

Wisconsin: Biden has been declared the winner.

Michigan: CNN and The Times have projected a Biden win with 97% of the votes in. He's up 49.8 to 48.6%

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson estimated that the state had to process between 170,000 and 180,000 ballots handed in in Detroit close to the state’s 8pm Election Day deadline for ballots.

Pennsylvania: Trump leads Biden 51.9% to 46.8% with 84% reported. Remaining ballots are expected to be largely from registered Democrats.

“Our democracy is being tested in this election,” Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf said at a press conference this morning, pledging to count every vote and keep the “election free of outside influences.”

He said the delay is a sign that a voting system put into place last year is working and that the state’s results may not be finalized today. In 2016, the state had 260,000 mail-in ballots and this year that number could hit 3m; close to 50% of the mail-in ballots had been counted by mid-morning.

North Carolina: Trump leads 50.1% to 48.7% with 95% reported. Mailed-in ballots with pre-11/3 postmarks will be accepted until 11/12.

Georgia: Trump is up 50.1% vs. 48.7% with 94% of the votes counted. Just before noon, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raggensperger said about 200,000 ballots needed to be counted plus another 40,000 to 50,000 mail-in ballots. “Every legal vote will count,” he said.

Nevada: Biden is winning, 49.3% to 48.7% with 86% of the votes in. They will resume counting ballots at 9am Thursday.

Arizona: Biden has been declared the winner, up 51% to 47.6% with 86% of the votes counted.

There are multiple paths to victory for both men but we’ve run out of crayons to do our own calculations. Here’s one.

If you’re looking for a bright spot, voters in New Jersey, South Dakota, Montana and Arizona have passed laws legalizing recreational marijuana. Doctors in Mississippi received voters’ OK to prescribe medical marijuana to people with certain conditions.
