The Pulitzer Prize committee, which last year honored Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN., will honor Aretha Franklin with a special citation for “her indelible contribution to American music and culture for more than five decades.”
Special citations have been given out since 1930 and gone to musicians such as Bob Dylan, Thelonious Monk, George Gershwin, Hank Williams and John Coltrane. Aretha, however, is the first female individual to receive the honor.
This year’s music Pulitzer went to Ellen Reid’s opera p r I s m, which was presented by LA Opera Off Grand and Beth Morrison Projects this past season after premiering at the REDCAT.
