LEON DOES L.A.: FIRST THE MUSEUM, THEN THE GREEK

Columbia's Leon Bridges graced the Grammy Museum's Clive Davis Theatre Monday for a performance and an intimate conversation with Executive Director Scott Goldman. During the Q&A session he discussed current album Good Thing and the forces that led to its creation. It was, No Depression declared, "a night that truly moved the soul."

Leon's sweater was subsequently offered a three-album deal.

On Tuesday night, Bridges performed a 90-minute set for a somewhat bigger audience at the sold-out Greek Theatre, working his way through the bulk of the songs from his two LPs in front of his super-tight touring band. For the first three numbers, including a scintillating “Bad, Bad News,” the band was augmented by an unidentified third guitarist who rode the groove with controlled abandon; we’re hoping to get his name for an update. A second guitarist who showed up during the climactic part of the set needed no introduction, as John Mayer, dressed for maximum comfort in his pajamas, added his signature blues licks to “Mrs.” and the encore number “Mississippi Kisses.” After the show, Mayer snapped an artful portrait of Bridges with his Leica and posted it on Instagram. Fun night.
