THE GREAT TREND DIVIDE: iTUNES VS. APPLE MUSIC

On Monday evening, 70% of the Top 10 songs at iTunes belonged to Universal artists. Conversely, 60% of the Top 10 songs at Apple Music are brought to you by Sony. And that’s how the charts have leaned for weeks.

It’s also interesting to note that 39 (or 78%) of the tracks listed on Apple Music’s Top 50 fall under the categories of either hip-hop/rap or R&B/soul, with 34 (or 68%) of those being hip-hop/rap. There, you’ll only find nine pop songs—two of which are Latin smashes—one pop-leaning alternative hit (Imagine Dragons’ “Believer”) and one country giant (Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road,” which is now spinning at Top 40 radio).

For perspective, the iTunes Top 50 looks like this: 24 pop (48%), 12 country (24%), 9 hip-hop/rap (18%), 3 alternative (6%) and 2 R&B/soul (4%).
