GROBAN MUSICAL LEADS TONY NOMS

The year after Hamilton stole the show at the Tony Awards, Josh Groban, Bette Midler, Dear Evan Hansen, Groundhog Day and Come From Away are heading into a wide-open competition led by Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812.

The musical race is largely between The Great Comet, which led the field with 12 nominations, Hansen, with Freddy DeMann among its producers, and Come From Away. The three shows are going head-to-head for Best Musical, Book, Orchestrations, Score, Lighting Design and Direction.

Natasha is also up for Best Actor (Groban), actress, featured actor, costume design, scenic design and choreography. Dear Evan Hansen’s nine noms includes featured actress and actor; among Come From Away’s seven noms are featured actress and choreography.

The recently opened musical Groundhog Day, which has Len Blavatnik and Tommy Mottola among its producers, received seven nominations.

Hello, Dolly! received 10 nominations and will compete with Falsettos, which received five nominations, and Miss Saigon for Best Revival of a Musical. Midler is up for Best Actress in a Musical; Dolly also received a noms for featured actor, direction, costume design, scenic design, lighting design and orchestrations.
