Universal's new M. Night Shyamalan thriller, Split, which stars James McAvoy, debuted at the top of the box office this weekend with $40m, making it the fourth largest January opening of all time. Another new release, Paramount's xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, followed at #2 with $20m.

1. Split (Universal) $40m 3,038/$13,229 avg. (debut)
2. xXx: The Return of Xander Cage (Paramount) $20m 3,651/$5,478 avg. (debut)
3. Hidden Figures (Fox) $16m 3,416/$4,757 avg. (week 5)
4. Sing (Universal) $9m 3,193/$2,830 avg. (week 5)
5. La La Land (Lionsgate) $8m 1,865/$4,477 avg. (week 7)

Meanwhile, A24's much-talked-about 20th Century Women, which scored a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, expanded to 650 theaters (+621), bringing in approximately $1.4m and lifting its total to $2.3m.
