GOLDEN GLOBES GO GAGA FOR LA LA AS RATINGS SPIKE (UPDATE)

The 74th annual Golden Globe Awards were handed out at the Beverly Hilton on Sunday night, and folks tuned in. The telecast clocked 20m viewers, an 8% bump over last year. La La Land ruled.

Exuberant host Jimmy Fallon set the tone for the evening with his opening dance number, a hilarious parody of La La Land. That modern musical about L.A. dreamers, as it happens, proceeded to break the Golden Globes record for most wins by a film, sweeping all seven categories it was nominated for; these included acting nods for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, plus every music category and Best Screenplay, Director and Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.

Another notable winner was Glassnote's Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino, whose series Atlanta—which he writes and produces—won Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy and Glover himself for Best Actor, Musical or Comedy.

Cecil B. DeMille Award recipient Meryl Streep held the entire room in rapt silence as she delivered a moving acceptance speech about another searing "performance," that of PEOTUS Donald Trump mocking a disabled reporter last year. "Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence," she noted, closing with a quote from her friend, the late Carrie Fisher, "take your broken heart, make it into art."
