CHART STORY: MENDES IS THE MAN

Illuminate, Shawn Mendes’ follow-up to debut full-length Handwritten, has bowed at #1 on the HITS Sales Plus Streaming Chart, earning 144k for the Island artist. On the Album Sales Chart, it also appeared at #1 with 119k. The chart-topping bow amplifies the Best New Artist Grammy buzz on the 18-year-old troubadour.

Four other debuts made the SPS 15 this week. Those are Luke Bryan’s Here’s to the Farmer EP (Capitol Nashville) at #4 with 33k, Bruce Springsteen’s Chapter and Verse (Columbia) at #5 with 32k, Crowder’s American Prodigal (Six Steps) at #13 with 20k and My Chemical Romance’s The Black Parade/Living With Ghosts (The 10th Anniversary Edition) (Reprise) at #14 with 19k.

However, on the Album Sales Chart, three more debuts made the Top 15. Those include Idina Menzel’s Idina. (Warner Bros.) at #8 with 14k and KansasThe Prelude Implicit (InsideOut) at #12 with 11k.

Interestingly, Maxwell’s BlackSUMMERS’night (Columbia), which dropped in July, re-entered the SPS Chart at #17 and the Album Sales Chart at #6 with about 17k, thanks to a powerful ticket bundle.

Focusing on SPS, The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind the Madness (XO/Republic) went #40-27, powered in part by the buzz surrounding the release of his new single, “Starboy,” and his upcoming performance on the season premiere of SNL.

Meanwhile at HITS, we continue to have all of the madness and none of the beauty. The same could be said for this year’s presidential race.

Streeting this week are albums from Jagjaguwar’s Bon Iver, Sire’s Regina Spektor, Harvest’s BANKS, Exile’s Van Morrison and HopelessYellowcard, as well as Jimi Hendrix’s Machine Gun Jimi Hendrix: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/1969—out via Legacy.

In other news, Q4 begins in earnest next week, so expect a heightened level of suck from us.
