A COVER BATTLE
TO "DIE" FOR

An old-school cover battle is underway as Thomas Rhett’s own megahit version of his song “Die a Happy Man” (on Scott Borchetta’s Valory/BMLG) finds itself selling alongside the rhythmic pop cover version by RECORDSNelly. At the moment, Rhett’s original version sits at #22 at iTunes, selling 1m+ RTD, while Nelly’s brand-new version is #25.

Rhett’s track spent six weeks at #1 on the Country radio chart (it’s currently #3). Charlie Walk and Team Republic are beginning to cross the track to Pop, following its chart debut at Hot AC.

What happens next? With all of Republic’s muscle at radio, should this even be a contest? How might the controversial history between Republic chief Monte Lipman and RECORDS’ Barry Weiss play into the current conflict? Will Republic be able to deny Weiss his first hit with the newco? Stay tuned.
