SPOTIFY SURGES POST-APPLE MUSIC LAUNCH

Remember Alanis Morissette’s song “Isn’t It Ironic”? In the seven days since the launch of Apple Music, Spotify had its best week ever in Apple’s U.S. App Store, Bloomberg reports. Apple Music’s chief competitor spent five straight days as the #9 iPhone app in the States, a spot it hadn't reached since December 2013. Spotify has since slipped to #10, but that’s still ahead of the app’s performance for nearly every day in its history.

The takeaway by Blooomberg’s Joshua Brustein is that increased attention for music streaming has generally been good for Spotify, even when it’s not the service making the news. For example, Spotify’s app also saw a big jump in the rankings on the day Jay Z launched Tidal. And while Spotify took a hit a month ago, when Apple announced its plans at the WWDC, it quickly recovered. The bigger question, obviously, is how many people sign up for the premium tier, and that info isn’t available. A Spotify spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to Brustein’s request for comment.
