Rhino Resurrection

RHINO'S BACK: Rhino Records, the famed retail store in Westwood which spawned the iconic catalog record label, will return as a pop-up venue from May 17-30 at 1740 Westwood Blvd., just a few doors down from its original location. The two week celebration will include a variety of activities and performances, including a showing of No Autographs, No Encores, the 35-minute film of Nirvana’s 1989 in-store performance there. There will also be in-store performances by the Blasters, Richard Thompson, Mike Watt, Spain, Maria McKee and Peter Case, along with appearances by Rhino luminaries such as Dr. Demento, Wild Man Fischer, Ruben & the Jets, Barnes & Barnes, Big Daddy and the Temple City Kazoo Orchestra. Store founder and Shout! Factory owner Richard Foos’ goal is to raise $100,000 for Chrysalis Enterprises, an L.A. nonprofit that has addressed the problems of the city’s economically disadvantaged for 20 years. The store will be selling not only Foos’ stuff, but also thousands more from his many media industry friends. It is expected that over 100,000 individual "pieces of product" will be sold over the course of Rhino's resurrection. (5/11a)
