Apple remains #1 music retailer

STILL THE ONE: Since edging out Walmart in 2008 to become the top music retailer, the iTunes Store has increased its lead and is now handling more than half of all digital music sales in the U.S., while outselling both Walmart and second place Best Buy combined. According to the bible, Apple's share of music sales increased by more than five percentage points, from 21.4% in 2008 to 26.7% last year. That's more than double the 12.7% share of the U.S. music market iTunes took in 2007, when the iPhone was first announced. Walmart, which remains the leader in physical sales, saw its share fall from 15% to 12.5% over the same year period, while Best Buy fell from 10.7% to 8.7%, despite acquiring the Napster. (5/21a)
