Aretha trib opener

ARETHA’S RED GLARE: The telecast started out not with a widescreen anthem from Arcade Fire, as rumored, but instead with a sort of Kennedy Center Honors tribute to Aretha Franklin. Of the five designated divas, the deeply soulful Jennifer Hudson carried the segment while she was on mic, and the seemingly miscast Florence showed herself to be a righteously old-school R&B belter. And was it just us, or did it seem like Christina Aguilera was trying a little too hard to reiterate her mastery of melisma following last Sunday’s oops? (8:15a)
