MIDNIGHT RIDER: On the heels of strong-selling memoirs from Keith Richards, Patti Smith, Steven Tyler and Sammy Hagar, Gregg Allman has signed a book deal with William Morrow for his autobiography. The publisher is an imprint of HarperCollins, which also acquired the English-language rights to Pete Townshend’s life story. Allman’s book will cover the formation of the Allman Brothers Band, his marriage to Cher and his problems with drugs and booze. “When I got out of high school, I thought, I’ll take a year or two off and play the clubs, get this out of my system, and then go to med school,” Allman said in a statement from the publisher. “More than 40 years later, I figure it’s finally time to write about this crazy journey that’s taken me around the world and back.” The book will be published next spring.
