AFTER MIDNIGHT: The Guardian ran this classic photo of Dexy’s Midnight Runners to accompany its coverage of Nick Gatfield’s appointment as Sony Music’s U.K./Ireland operations, succeeding Ged Doherty (see item below). Lest we forget, Gatfield was the group’s sax player and keyboardist—but which one is he? The story contains this quote from Doug Morris: "Nick is an accomplished music executive with a successful A&R background, strong senior management experience and a special understanding of the artist community being a former recording artist himself.” Writes Dan Sabbagh: “This decision reflects a desire by Morris to bring in his team into Sony Music, a company characterized by powerful but competing executives, some of whose divisions date back to the era of the joint venture with BMG.” (7/21a)
