Berry Gordy Honored as Motown: The Musical Begins Previews

DANCING IN THE AISLES: Fresh off the start of previews last night for the Broadway show Motown: The Musical, which opens April 14 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater, the label’s venerable founder Berry Gordy will be the recipient of the prestigious Pioneer Award, to be presented at the 44th Annual Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Dinner slated for June 13 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in N.Y., it was announced by Chairman Jimmy Webb. The award was established last year to honor the career of a historic creator of an extensive body of musical work that has been a major influence on generations of songwriters. The first award was presented to Woody Guthrie. Gordy and Sony Music’s Doug Morris are the producers of the musical with Tony Award winner Kevin McCollum (Rent, In the Heights, Avenue Q). (3/12a)
