Petty at Fonda

HOMETOWN BLUES: Following five nights of deep cuts at New York’s Beacon Theatre, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers returned home to L.A. Monday night for a six-night stand at the Fonda Theatre on Hollywood Blvd., and these consummate pros delivered the goods, as always. Interestingly, Petty went with a setlist that was identical to their first night at the Beacon (minus a cover of Chuck Berry’s Oh Carol,” which the band atypically messed up in New York), and the performance went all over the place with an abundance of little-heard tunes before erupting with a Led-Zep-heavy “I Should Have Known It” from 2010’s Mojo, one of numerous spellbinding moments from the extraordinary Mike Campbell, on at least a dozen different guitars. From there on out, it was as good as rock & roll gets, and those who were lucky enough to have scored tickets were reminded that nobody represents the form more convincingly than this crew. Check out this fan video of the final encore, a blistering run through the band’s quintessential “American Girl.” The sound only approximates what the crowd heard, but it’ll give you a pretty good idea.
