Weekend Box Office

YOUR WEAK-END BOX OFFICE: September doldrums were still in effect at the movies, but Prisoners, the dark kidnap drama starring Hugh Jackman, ruled in its debut frame with an estimated $21 million this weekend. Last week's champ, the horror sequel Insidious Chapter 2, scared up just $14m; that takes the James Wan-directed ghost story to $60m so far, which is 12 times what it cost to make. Still, it pales next to the filmmaker's recent haunted-house hit, The Conjuring.

1. Prisoners (Warner Bros.) $21.4m, 3,260/$6,574 avg. (debut)
2. Insidious Chapter 2 (Film District) $14.5m, 3,155/$4,596 avg. (-64%, second week)
3. The Family (Relativity) $7m, 3,091/$2,265 avg. (-50%, second week)
4. Instructions Not Included (LGF) $5.7m, 978/$5,828 avg. (+17%, fourth week)
5. Battle of the Year (Screen Gems) $5m 2,008/$2,490 avg. (debut)
