Perhaps the week’s biggest story is the new Firm-managed American Idol winner Taylor Hicks, whose just-released single, “Do I Make You Proud,” is on target for sales of 150k.

ONE-DAY SALES: JUNE IS BUSTA OUT ALL OVER!

Busta Rhymes’ Aftermath/Interscope Bow Appears Headed for Chart-Topping Debut, As Taylor Hicks Single Hits Marketplace
Busta Rhymes and Dr. Dre are proving a formidable combination.

The Big Bang, the veteran rapper’s first album for the Aftermath/Interscope label, appears poised to top next week’s HITS Top 50, with sales that could go over 200k. Based on one-day sales reports from retailers around the country, the album will easily top Tuesday’s sales chart with between 210-220k.

The only other chart debuts of note include Jive rockers Three Days Grace, whose One X album looks headed for between 70-75k in sales, which would place it somewhere in the Top 10. Billy Joel’s two CD live set on Columbia, recorded at New York’s Madison Square Garden, 12 Gardens Live, is on pace to sell between 35-40k.

Perhaps the week’s biggest story is the new Firm-managed American Idol winner Taylor Hicks, whose just-released single, “Do I Make You Proud,” is on target for sales of 150k. That’s a lot of gray hairs, folks.

Other records which hit the streets yesterday include albums by punk legends Sonic Youth (Geffen), cult metallurgists Shadows Fall (Century Media), critical darling Regina Spektor (Sire), U.K. avant-gardists The Futureheads making their debut on L.A. emo label Vagrant Records, a Spanish album from Tijuana-born Frankie J (Columbia) and a Replacements box set (Rhino).

Overall, the market was up more than 2.5% from last week, but down a whopping 14% from the same week last year and now down 3.5% overall. Is it summer yet?
