AFI MOVES UP FROM THE UNDERGROUND

Interscope Rockers Look Headed for #1, With Rappers Ice Cube, Yung Joc Also Aiming for Six-Figure Opening Weeks
In Goth they trust.

Based on one-day retail reports from around the country, mascara rockers AFI’s Interscope album Decemberunderground looks headed for the top spot on next Tuesday’s HITS album chart, with an estimated 200-225k in sales. That would be more than enough to turn back the Dixie Chicks, who racked up 260k on their second consecutive week at #1.

Lench Mob/Virgin’s Ice Cube album, Laugh Now, Cry Later, is showing some surprising retail strength, with an estimated 125-150k in sales, good enough to fight it out for #3 next week with Bad Boy South/Atlantic’s Atlanta-based rapper Yung Joc, whose New Joc City is the latest entry from the P. Diddy stable, with appearances by Lil Wayne and Marques Houston. Cube’s total is a credit to his management team at The Firm, who are coordinating the marketing and promotion of the album in-house.

Disney Records’ soundtrack to the sure-to-be Pixar smash Cars appears to be in the 60-70k range, with the movie opening this Friday. The soundtrack features Sheryl Crow, Rascal Flats, Brad Paisley, James Taylor, John Mayer, Chuck Berry and Hank Williams, among others.

Koch’s D.J. Khaled seems to be the other chart newcomer, with a first-week total that could approach 50k.

Hitting retail next Tuesday are Busta RhymesAftermath/Interscope bow, which could go as high as 200-250k, and Jive/ZLG’s Three Days Grace, with a shot at topping 100k. Century Media’s flagship rockers Shadows Fall appears headed over 50k, as the band prepares to hit the road for an extensive tour this summer.

Overall, the market was down 7% vs. last week, down 10% vs. same week last year and is now off 3% year-to-date.
