JAY-Z'S THE MAN, LEADS WITH SIX NOMS FOR 21st MTV VMAS

Beyoncé, No Doubt and OutKast Have
Five Apiece; Usher, Kanye West, Hoobastank, Jet, Jessica Simpson Set to Perform in Miami

It's all about Jay-Z and Beyoncé at MTV's 2004 Video Music Awards, the 21st in an illustrious history that began back in 1984 with Madonna squirming to "Like a Virgin" on the stage at Radio City Music Hall.

The man known as Jigga or Hova topped the list with six nominations for his music video "99 Problems." His gal Beyoncé, along with No Doubt and OutKast, follow with five nods each.

Beyoncé nabbed four nods for her music video "Naughty Girl" and one for "Me, Myself and I." No Doubt garnered five noms for their music video "It's My Life" and OutKast received five noms for their music video "Hey Ya."

The 2004 VMAs will broadcast live from American Airlines Arena in Miami, FL on Sunday, August 29 at 8:00 p.m. (live ET/tape delayed PT). It's the first time the show has been held in Miami after being staged in either New York or L.A. Among the announced performers are nominees Usher, Kanye West, Hoobastank, Yellowcard, Jet and Jessica Simpson.

MTV/MTV2 President Van Toffler praised the nominees while hoping no one flashes a moon over Miami during the telecast: "These top nominees will set the stage for one of the biggest nights in music. We've brought in the heavy hitters. These artists put on incredible live shows, which combined with the heat of Miami, some surprise collaborations, and a stage like no other seen on television will make for an unforgettable night."

Voting for Viewer's Choice and the MTV2 Award will begin on July 27. Voting for the final five nominees for Viewer's Choice will start on August 18.
