ONE-DAY SALES: QUIET TIME

As the two superstars dominate the top of the chart, a couple of this week’s new releases are shaping up to be Top 20 contenders.

The week’s biggest new release, Tamia’s More (Elektra), appears headed for a first-week total of around 70-80k, according to early reports from national accounts. A big weekend, however, could push that number higher, as some retailers expect the album to trend up.

Barry Manilow’s two-disc live set, 2 Nights Live (BMG Heritage), meanwhile, looks at this point like it could do around 50k for the week, though the crooner’s busy TV schedule could bump that number up as well.

Meanwhile, Epic Records PoMo upstarts Modest Mouse have parlayed impressive alternative radio play into first-week sales of around 40k.

Behind the mighty Mouse are two left-field records that are surprising many accounts: American Idol regular William Hung (“She Bangs”) now has an album out on Koch, Inspiration, and while the rush release is still making its way to stores, it’s selling surprisingly well where it’s stocked, and could approach 30k-40k for the week. Hung is doing the Tonight Show tomorrow, and Good Morning America on Friday, so this is one to watch.

Meanwhile, midwest rap group Dark Lotus (on Insane Clown Posse label Psychopathic) is seeing strong regional sales and likewise could come close to 30k before the week is over.
