WEEK IN PREVIEW: "DANCING DAYS" HERE AGAIN FOR LED ZEP

Rock Band’s CD/DVD Releases Returns Zep to Chart Supremacy; Metallica Release Date Pushed Up
A Whole Lotta Zeppelin songs hit the market this week, and consumers were ready to snap ‘em up.

As sales reports continue to come in, Zeppelin's three-CD package of live recordings from two L.A. concerts in 1972, How the West Was Won (Atlantic), will easily sell 100k and may reach 120k for the week.

That puts the concert document solidly in contention for #1 this week, with Staind and Deftones expected to do the usual settling of about 50% after their first-week splashes.

Meanwhile, the two-disc video release, Led Zeppelin DVD (WSM) has also seen surprisingly high demand, keeping pace with the CD package at most accounts.

Some stock issues were being reported early on, but these have largely been addressed, according to reports. That means the DVD could do 80k for the week, making it the biggest first week for a music video release ever, ahead of Paul McCartney's Back in the U.S., which sold about 60k out of the box.

While most retailers say they are stocking the DVD and CD sets in separate sections of their stores, consumer demand for both been high.

The two packages feature different sets of material recorded live at different shows. The two-DVD title, released Tuesday for $29.98, is the first official live concert DVD from the band, and features classic '70s performances from London's Royal Albert Hall and Earl's Court, while the three-CD package is culled from the band’s two 1972 L.A. concerts.

In other news, Metallica's St. Anger will now be released early on Thursday (6/5) ahead of its scheduled June 10 street date. The move comes following concerns at Elektra over the proliferation of "unauthorized versions" of the album.
