Avril Keeps Skating, Adults Keep Selling, Clipse Score at #4
Multiple hits make for multi-platinum sales. How’s that for a revelation?

With "Cleaning Out My Closet" topping the MPS charts, "White America" gaining and stations starting to spin "Hailie’s Song," Aftermath/Interscope rapper Eminem returns to the #1 spot on the charts this week. He leapfrogs over Fo’ Reel/Universal’s Nelly, who has two hits of his own in "Dilemma" and "Hot in Herre."

Just behind them, Arista teen chanteuse Avril Lavigne climbs into the #3 position, thanks to "Complicated," with new single "Sk8er Boi" right behind it. Labelmates Clipse, whose Neptunes-released album has already produced the Urban Crossover hit "Grindin’," are now riding the follow-up Pop hit, "When the Last Time," to an impressive #4 bow.

Adult records continue to thrive in the marketplace, with Columbia/CRG’s Bruce Springsteen’s current tour and media saturation translating to a solid #5, while fellow label act James Taylor continues strong at #6. Blue Note/Virgin’s Norah Jones cracks the Top 10, sporting a nearly 20% increase to 72k, and Aware/Columbia/CRG’s John Mayer moves 18-14, breaking 50k for the first time.

AEC One-Stop Group’s Tony Bazemore thought he was talking to Billboard when he offered this bon mot: "Although the top of the chart continues to be dominated by rap artists like Eminem, Nelly and Clipse, the interesting story to me is the thriving adult titles. We supply Barnes & Noble, so we’ve got a real clear picture as to how just strong titles like Springsteen, James Taylor and Norah Jones are."

Epic’s Now Vol. 10 (#7) WB’s Linkin Park (#8) and DreamWorks Nashville’s Toby Keith (#9) round out the week’s Top 10. American/Columbia/CRG’s System of a Down benefited from retail-wide discounts and big play on "Aerials," showing a 26% increase in sales and a 35-25 rise on the chart.

MCA Nashville’s Lee Ann Womack (#16), Elektra/EEG’s Angie Martinez (#19), Virgin’s Beenie Man (#21), Arista Nashville’s Diamond Rio (#22), WEA Latina’s Mana (#30) and Rykodisc’s Eva Cassidy (#38) are the week’s newcomers.

Next week, look out for Open Wide/Columbia’s Dixie Chicks to lead the chart charge.
