FRIDAY CHART PREVIEW: "ROYALS" AND OTHER ROYALTY

The term “multi-format smash” gets thrown around a lot, but as the sneak peeks at three major Mediabase formats below amply confirm, Lorde’s got one. Meanwhile, Katy Perry rules at Pop and moves up at Rhythm and RCA’s got two generations of vixens making noise at Top 40.

TOP 40
Katy Perry’s smash “Roar” (Capitol) has built a 2000-spin lead on her labelmates Capital Cities and is firmly entrenched in the #1 spot at Top 40 radio for Monday. PRMD/Island/IDJ’s Avicii storms into the Top 5 with his monster hit “Wake Me Up,” which is up over 1700 spins. Lava/Republic’s Lorde will surge into the Top 10 with “Royals,” which also is #1 on the iTunes singles chart today. We see plenty of big movers this week, as Interscope’s Lady Gaga inches closer to the Top 10 and ”Wrecking Ball” by RCA’s Miley Cyrus is on fire, up over 2000 spins and set to move up an impressive 12 spots, #35-23. RCA’s big week will continue with a strong debut at #25 from Britney Spears’ new one, “Work Bitch.”

RHYTHMIC
Drake’s “Hold On We’re Going Home” (YM/CM/Republic) is in a dogfight with Jay Z’s “Holy Grail” (Roc-a-Fella/Roc Nation) for the coveted #1 spot. It’ll come down to mere spins for sure! Chris Brown’s “Love More” (RCA) goes Top 5, and Katy Perry’s “Roar” (Capitol) makes its way into the Top 10. Look for huge jumps from Lorde’s “Royals” (Lava/Republic), Macklemore’s “White Walls” (Macklemore), Sage The Gemini’s “Gas Pedal” (Empire/Republic) and Ariana Grande f/Big Sean “Right There” (Republic). August Alsina’s “I Luv This Sh*t” (Def Jam/IDJ) will also have a great jump. Finally, look for a number of stations to start playing the Justin Timberlake’s “T.K.O” (RCA) this weekend.

ALTERNATIVE
Lava/Republic’s Lorde will stay #1 for a historic seventh week at Modern Rock come Monday. The competition for a new #1 is officially on, as Fitz & the Tantrums and Capitol’s Bastille battle to take over Lorde’s reign. It’s been a big week of spins for Virgin’s Thirty Seconds to Mars, as “City Of Angels” quickly arrives at #12. Coldplay will see “Atlas” on (Republic’s Hunger Games: Catching Fire ST) zoom #25-17. Warner Bros., meanwhile, is seeing an impressive first week of spins from Linkin Park’s latest, “A Light That Never Comes,” which could debut at #20. Merge’s Arcade Fire is also enjoying a strong first week of airplay with “Reflektor”; look for it to move #36-28. Next week, look for Pearl Jam’s “Sirens” (Monkeywrench/Republic) to have a loud debut.
