SURF’S UP! BRIAN WILSON RETURNS TO CAPITOL

Beach Boys Auteur and CMG Ruler Steve Barnett Are All SMiLES as They Announce New Deal and Album in Progress

Brian Wilson has returned to Capitol Music Group, for which he’s now recording and self-producing his 11th studio album at Hollywood’s Ocean Way Studios, the label announced this morning.

The Beach Boys legend is working with several members of his longtime touring band, including Jeffrey Foskett, Scott Bennett, Paul Mertens, Darian Sahanaja and Probyn Gregory. Wilson has also asked fellow Beach Boys Al Jardine and David Marks to join him in the studio, as well as A-listers Don Was and Jim Keltner. Longtime collaborator Joe Thomas is helping Brian to hone the arrangements. The list of key contributors is topped off by fellow Hall of Famer Jeff Beck, along with his latter-day rhythm section of drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and bassist Tal Wilkenfeld.

Wilson continued to write new songs throughout the Beach Boys’ 50th anniversary year. He told family, friends, and journalists around the world that he had a rock & roll-driven album in mind, and he looked forward to returning to the studio when he got back home to California.

"I was really moved by the fans’ excitement about the Beach Boys’ album and tour last year," Wilson said in a statement. "It charged me up and my head was full of music—I just couldn’t wait to get back into the studio to let it out."

With a rock premise in mind, Wilson knew exactly who to call. "When I watched Jeff Beck perform ‘Surf’s Up’ to honor me at the MusiCares Person of the Year event in 2005, I knew I had to find a way to work with him," he recalled. "He absolutely blew my mind, and we’ve been friends ever since. Jeff’s incredible guitar playing is exactly what I want for my new album and I’m also looking forward to performing live with him soon."

Wilson is pleased to once again be working with his team at Capitol. "My long relationship with Capitol and the people there means a lot to me," he said. "I’m very happy, because the label has grown a lot and I’m working with a great group of people who have welcomed me back to Capitol with good ears and open arms."

Commented a delighted Steve Barnett: "Brian Wilson is simply one of the most important figures in the history of popular music, and he continues to have a far-reaching and influential impact on our culture. His contributions to the legacy of Capitol Records are immeasurable, and I couldn’t be more thrilled that he is once again part of the Capitol family and that he is already employing his enormous musical powers to create new music. What a pleasure for me to say, 'Welcome back, Brian.'"
