56TH ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS: THE WINNERS AND MORE

The Awards Have Been Awarded;
Now Come the Spikes

The 2014 edition of the Grammy Awards belonged to Daft Punk with five wins,including Album and Record of the Year, with Pharrell sharing in those wins while also getting Producer of the Year. (The last artist to pull off a double win on Album and Record was their labelmate Adele.)

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis racked up four wins, including Best New Artist, while Lorde scored Song and Pop Solo Performance. It was also a breakout night for Kacey Musgraves, who snagged Country Album for Same Trailer Different Park and Song for “Merry Go Round.”

Musgraves’ debut LP is one of eight Grammy-related albums in the iTunes Top 10 immediately following the live telecast, with the western half of the country in the second hour of the tape delay as this is written. The next order of business involves the Grammy spikes, which we've begun to chronicle here.

As you know if you followed our Rumor Mill play-by-play, the night was studded with memorable performances, including Daft Punk's throwdown with Pharrell, Nile Rodgers and guest Stevie Wonder; an incendiary Imagine Dragons-Kendrick Lamar pairing; an erotically charged Beyoncé-Jay Z duet; a typically mesmerizing rendition of "Royals" by Lorde; a charming "Follow Your Arrow" from Musgraves; P!nk getting her Cirque du Soleil on before dueting with Nate Ruess; a witchy "Dark Horse" by Katy Perry with Juicy J; Robin Thicke joining Chicago for a tour of the group's hits and "Blurred Lines"; a spot-on "When Will I Be Loved" Everlys tribute from Billie Joe Armstrong and Miranda Lambert; a dramatic "All Too Well" from Taylor Swift; and an elaborate "Same Love" from Macklemore that featured not only vocalist Mary Lambert from the recording but guests Madonna (who crooned a bit of her "Open Your Heart") and Queen Latifah, who served as officiant in the wedding of 30-plus couples in attendance. The rousing rock finale featured Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, Dave Grohl and Lindsay Buckingham, although it was cut off before its conclusion by CBS due to time constraints.

Other perfs included Beatles (and Lifetime Achievement Award recipients) Paul and Ringo reuniting on Sir P's "Queenie Eye," an all-star Country medley with Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and Blake Shelton, a wild blend of metal and classical from Metallica and Chinese pianist Lang Lang, a piano duet by Carole King and Sara Bareilles, a guitar-slinging pairing of Keith Urban and Gary Clark Jr., and an intimate recital from John Legend. Meanwhile, Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman and Oscar nominee Jared Leto paid spoken tribute to the late Lou Reed.

If there were few spontaneous moments outside the performances on the LL Cool J-hosted telecast, there were no real gaffes, and a few bon mots. One favorite came from Rap/Sung Collaboration winner Jay Z, who declared: "I wanna tell Blue, 'Daddy got a gold sippy cup for you.'"
