THINGS THAT MAKE ME GO HMMM … GRAMMY EDITION

What’s Preoccupying HITS Editor in Chief Lenny Beer This Awards Season
Recently, a wadded-up piece of wax paper flew into the cesspool’s editorial offices and bounced off an editor’s head. When we uncrumpled the projectile—which was redolent of Carny’s chili-cheese fries and chronic—we found a missive from HITS Editor in Chief Leonard J. Beer scrawled in mustard and grease. His latest musings, which we’ve endeavored to translate from yelling into English, largely concern the upcoming Grammy nominations, shadowed as they are by last year’s embarrassing omissions. We only wish some of the fries and weed were left.

  1. Frozen is by far the biggest album of the year pretty much everywhere on Planet Earth. So why is it not a lock for an Album of the Year Grammy nod in everyone’s prognostications? It has great songs—including a multi-format hit that’s had audiences singing along in dozens of languages—and important artists. And if you don’t have children, ask a friend who does about the soundtrack’s all-consuming impact on families. Then again, there is the question of whether John Travolta can properly pronounce the relevant names.
  2. Ariana Grande’s stunning AMA-nominations shutout has caused a lot of chatter about bad choices and pulled performances, but we’re betting bigtime that the team of Ken Ehrlich, Jack Sussman and Neil Portnow will find a unique and adult way to feature her on the Grammys.
  3. Speaking of questionable choices, did Grammy superheavyweight Bill Freimuth actually admit in a Billboard interview that ensuring Esperanza Spalding not only got nominated but won for Best NewArtist was, in fact, an internal agenda? We’ve been telling people that for years, typically causing jaws to drop. Well, sports fans, there you go.
  4. Just as a great movie released in the first half of Oscar season can be overwhelmed by an avalanche of contenders in the fall/winter months, we just want everyone to remember the emotional impact made by A Great Big World’s brilliant and moving song “Say Something.” Clearly media mavens from John Oliver to the Muppets recognize this hit’s power, as they continue to include the band and song in their programming. We suggest that voters act accordingly.
  5. And finally, we’ll wager that Sam Smith and Beyoncé will command the headlines when the nominations are released. Look for multiple nominations for both of these mega-talents, with Smith a virtual lock in the Best New Artist category—unless, of course, there’s an INTERNAL agenda.
