Spoon's sudden release

SPOON, SUDDENLY: After a 12-year, five-LP run with Merge, celebrated indie-rock stalwarts Spoon, recently enlarged to a five-piece, have moved on to Loma Vista, in a coup for Tom Whalley’s Republic sub-label. "Rent I Pay," a track from the upcoming album They Want My Soul (8/5), drops today to Specialty and Non-Comm, and more details are expected to be forthcoming tomorrow. The band, which busted out one new song at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound Festival last weekend, and another one during their the Governors Ball set, will launch "Rent I Pay" in a live performance on NPR.com from Le Poisson Rouge in New York at 10:30am PDT. In the meantime, check out the short, sharp teaser. But what do they mean by R.I.P.? Presumably, all will be revealed shortly. (6/9a)
