PRIMARY WAVE SAYS IT TAKES A VILLAGE

Primary Wave Music has struck a partnership with the Village People. The publisher will work with Jonathan and Anthony Belolo, sons of original producer Henri Belolo, in connection with the Village People brand, the group’s recordings and its publishing assets.

Founded in 1977, the Village People have sold more than 100m records globally. Songs covered by the deal include some of their biggest hits, including the #1 classic “Y.M.C.A." as well as “Macho Man,” “In the Navy” and “Go West.”

In March 2020 the Library of Congress called "Y.M.C.A."—which has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and alone has sold 12m+ copies—"an American phenomenon" and added it to the National Recording Registry, which preserves recordings considered "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant."

“The Village People have brought so much joy to listeners around the world for decades," said Lexi Todd, Primary Wave VP of business & legal affairs. "With disco-inspired music all over the contemporary charts, now is the perfect time to launch our new partnership."

Said Jonathan and Anthony Belolo in a joint statement: “As we were picking up the mantle following the passing of our father in 2019, we realized that to achieve his dreams of bringing the Village People ideal into the 21st century the right way is a very bold endeavor. Our partnership with the amazing team at Primary Wave now brings us the expertise that will ensure we can rise to the task together. With multiple projects in development, the future looks as bright as ever for the Village People.”
